Group Courses

For younger children who are aiming for general English improvement, we offer English Comprehension and Writing, Creative Writing, and Express Yourself. For these courses to be successful, we need to team up students with similar strengths and weaknesses, so applicants will be asked to do a piece of writing unaided, at home, in advance, to enable us to assess their suitability to the group.

Course Description (ten sessions of 1.5 hours)

Next Course Starts on Monday 8th January 2018 and ends on Monday 19th March 2018 with tutor Liz Gower

The course focuses on the interconnected skills of reading (and understanding) texts and producing well-formed English writing. We look at different styles of prose, using extracts from both contemporary and classical writing, and encourage the process of Active Reading. This helps children to ‘read between the lines’ and respond to questions in both short and longer formats. The participants are also encouraged to use textual prompts to develop their own effective writing.

We aim to develop appropriate register and vocabulary, improve sentence structure, spelling and punctuation, and get students to stop fearing/avoiding the fun process of comprehension and composition.
